The Rulebook That Kept Moving: How Cricket's Laws Changed | THE LONG FORM Ep. 4

№ 0092026-10-02REELON THE RECORD

Cricket's rulebook has never stood still — from Willsher's 1862 walk-off to the TV umpire.

THE ARM

1862: Edgar Willsher is no-balled six times for bowling above the shoulder; he and eight other professionals walk off. Overarm is legal two years later.

THE CREASE

1963: overstepping moves from the back foot to the front foot.

THE METAL

1979: Dennis Lillee walks out against England with an aluminium bat; the next year the Laws say the blade must be wood.

THE UNDERARM

1981: legal that day, and still allowed today only by prior agreement.

THE EYE

1992 TV umpire, 2009 player reviews, 2022 non-striker run-out moved into the run-out law: reclassified, not newly legalised.
